Florida Homeschool Overview

Florida is considered a moderate homeschool state, more requirements than the most permissive states but significantly less burdensome than New York or Pennsylvania. Florida law gives homeschool families genuine flexibility while maintaining basic accountability.

Who Can Homeschool in Florida?

Any parent or legal guardian may homeschool their child in Florida. There is no requirement for the parent to hold a teaching certificate or specific educational credential.

Florida Homeschool Requirements

Notice of Intent

You must file a Notice of Intent with your county school district within 30 days of beginning homeschooling. This is a simple written notification, not an application for approval. The school district cannot deny your right to homeschool.

If you withdraw your child from public school to homeschool, the Notice of Intent must be filed at that time.

Required Subjects

Florida law (§ 1002.41) requires that homeschool instruction include:

  • Reading
  • Language arts
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social studies
  • Art
  • Music
  • Health and physical education

ProTeach covers all required Florida subjects. The Base plan includes 3 subjects per week; the Premium plan covers all subjects with 15 lessons per subject per week.

Portfolio Requirement

Florida requires you to maintain a portfolio of educational materials throughout the year. The portfolio must include:

  • A log of educational activities (does not need to specify hours)
  • Samples of the student's work: at least one sample per subject per year
  • Results of any standardized testing or evaluations (if applicable)

There is no minimum hour requirement in Florida. You are not required to log a specific number of instructional hours.

Annual Evaluation

Each year, you must have your child evaluated using ONE of the following methods:

  1. Portfolio review by a Florida-certified teacher (the most common method)
  2. Standardized test administered by a Florida-certified teacher or testing service
  3. Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) or other statewide assessment
  4. Psychological evaluation by a licensed psychologist
  5. Any other valid measurement tool mutually agreed upon by the parent and evaluator

Most Florida homeschool families use the portfolio review option. It requires no standardized testing and gives you maximum flexibility.

Notification of Completion

After each annual evaluation, you must file a Notice of Continuation with your county school district indicating that the evaluation was completed.

Florida Homeschool FAQs

Can I homeschool a child with an IEP or 504 plan?

Yes. Florida law explicitly protects the right to homeschool children with disabilities. However, once you withdraw your child from public school, they are no longer entitled to public school special education services. ProTeach's Teacher Companion has extensive experience with IEPs and learning differences.

Do homeschooled students have access to public school extracurriculars?

Florida's "Tim Tebow Law" gives homeschooled students the right to participate in public school extracurricular activities (sports, band, clubs) in their resident school district.

What if I miss the annual evaluation deadline?

Technically, failure to evaluate is a violation of Florida law. However, the consequence is typically that your child must enroll in public school, not fines or criminal charges.
